Developing Prophetic Kids: A Quick Q& A Discussion
Q: Help! What kinds of resources should I use to develop my students' prophetic gifts?
A: This may sound too simple, but the Bible is the single most important resource for a young prophet or prophetic kid. The scriptures are inherently prophetic and will teach them God’s mind. There are few things more important than your prophetic child knowing the mind of God and how He thinks. Incorporate kid-centered bible devos that focus on the prophets: Daniel, Joseph, Jeremiah, etc. Secondly, choose resources that emphasize prayer and worship. In The Prophet’s Handbook, by Dr. Paula Price talks about the prophet’s highest call is to prayer. Teach them closeness, intimacy and devotion to their God and utilize products that support this in an innovative way. Download my Junior Prophets Dream Journal to help them start charting their dreams and learning how to interpret what they mean.
Q: Are there particular bible passages young prophets should study?
A: You really can’t go wrong with using any part of the scriptures to develop your child prophetically-the scriptures testify of Christ and the testimony of Christ is the spirit of prophecy. Make bible reading a strong part of their everyday in God, a pattern and a must-do in your house. Have them read and study the prophets. Explore and discuss how each prophet was called by God, into His service, dive into their prophecies and help your young prophet understand the unique qualities of each prophets mantle. Talk about how and why God used each prophet and the different ways they manifested their prophetic abilities. Take it a step further by talking with them about how what they read in the scriptures compares to what God is doing in them.
Q: How can I recognize if my child is called to the prophetic?
Prophetic characteristics found in children are not too dissimilar than those of adult/mature prophets. Numbers 12:6 if there is a prophet among you, I the Lord, make myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream. Dreams and visions are the most common ways the Lord will prophetically awaken. Prophetic kids are extremely intuitive, curious, articulate and communicative. They are generally self-driven and motivated, critical thinkers, passionate (sometimes to a fault), creative and outspoken. When it comes to spiritual or the supernatural prophetic kids are both intrigued and drawn. This is why it becomes essential to root and ground them in the word of God, prayer and worship to help them properly discern and recognize the Lord's voice. See other characteristics as outlined in The Prophet’s Handbook by Dr. Paula Price.
